on flowers

The long stem
it brings back the specter
of our laughter
of our conversations
of our pride
of our relationship
the blue reminds me
of a summer not long ago past
the bells chime
and there are smiles all around
there’s a hum in the air
even though our feet are on the ground
it brings back memories
of us together
under the sapphire sky
when the summer’s lusty song
had lured us from
our wintry cover.
We took full bloom
showing everyone our splendid colors
the curling twining green
leads away from these
happy blues and further
becomes one with the stem.
Nearer at the top things
begin to fade, giving way
into time and the dust
of neglected memories
I try my best to nourish
this beloved flower—a sign of
my love for you—but
it’s so hard without your help
without you here by my side.
As I hold the
precious flower in my hand
I realize that it is fading
and will all too soon be gone.
I try everything to save the
precious flower but alas
it cannot be.
I sigh contently and
breathe in the delicate smell.
Once again it brings back
a mad river of rushing memories.
I surrender myself
to its mad current and
find that it has a calming effect
on my newly discovered revelations.
I rub my fingers on the stem
and begin to smile.
I have this precious flower—
something so simple and sweet—
to ever hold onto;
a beautiful reminder of our innocent love.
